Proverbs 3:13-35
In early 2009 an advertisement appeared on the sides of London’s red buses, sponsored and paid for by various humanist and atheist societies and individuals, such as Richard Dawkins – lead promoter of atheist fundamentalism: “There probably is no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy life.”
Chris Wright, professor of world missions, thought it “a curious misunderstanding” when he saw it, “for it suggests that belief in God only makes people worried or spoils their enjoyment.” However, as he noted, “all the research and statistics have shown that people with Christian faith are less stressed than average and have a markedly greater sense of life-fulfillment.”
But his main response to the slogan was, “Well, that’s not much of a story. In fact, no story at all. It gives nobody a positive reason to live (or die).” Contrast the gospel. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). “Now there’s a story!” thought Wright, “It has a subject, a problem, an action, a solution and a happy ending.”
This week we conclude Proverbs 3 as we look at What Wisdom Creates in Prov. 3:13-35. Wisdom creates a culture of life amid this culture of death called our world. Day after day we are inundated with bad news – so much violence, so much greed, so much darkness and sadness. God’s magnificent world has been hijacked by foolishness and death.
But the risen Jesus is pouring out his Spirit to create a culture of life, called the church. Wisdom, as we will see, is a community experience. It is a shared experience of life in its fullness.
Join us this coming Lord’s Day as we continue learn God’s way of wisdom for life through his community.
In Christ,
Pastor Wayne
